JAKARTA, 18 October 2022 – The ASEAN Secretariat and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) held the ‘Why Good Regulatory Practice Matters to ASEAN’ virtual seminar, yesterday. The seminar aims to help socialise the progress of ASEAN’s work on Good Regulatory Practices (GRP) and facilitate information exchange on GRP best practices in the region.

The ASEAN Handbook on GRP was launched at the seminar. The handbook is intended for regulators and regulatory officials, particularly those involved in the process of formulation and implementation of regulations. It provides step-by-step guidance for the implementation of and compliance with GRP principles and describes in greater detail the preparation of Regulatory Impact Statement, the Regulatory Impact Analysis process, and the key requirements.

ASEAN Secretariat representatives emphasised the importance ASEAN Member States (AMS) attach to GRP, especially given its role in ensuring the success of their development agenda, fulfilling their regional commitments, as well as building the region’s long-term competitiveness in the global economy. They further highlighted ASEAN’s progress in implementing its Work Plan on GRP 2025.

The virtual seminar was attended by diverse ASEAN stakeholders, including relevant member states officials in charge of GRP implementation, as well as representatives from think-tanks, private sector, and the wider public. The virtual seminar was moderated by Dr. Rashesh Shrestha, a research fellow from ERIA.

Speakers of the event included Dr. Gilberto M. Llanto from the Philippine Institute for Development Studies, Shahriza Bahari from Malaysia Productivity Corporation, and Eunice Huang from Google.
