Towards the end of addressing rural development, this paper is concerned with rural people and the impacts that government intervention have on their welfare. It discusses the relevance of the perspectives of the economics profession and of the analytic approach to rural development programming. This paper argues that economists should go beyond interpretation and measurement of economic relationships and allow the significant scope of interests to facilitate closer ties with sociologists and other social scientists.
