The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) will conduct a seminar on The European Union (EU) Immigration Crisis on April 11, 2016, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the PIDS Conference Room, 18th Floor, Three Cyberpod Centris - North Tower, EDSA corner Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.
In recent years, Europe has experienced a huge influx of immigrants, mostly from Middle East and Africa. The large migration inflow into the European Union (EU) is caused by push and pull factors, with civil wars and terror in the country of origin of the migrants as the push factor and the perceived better quality of life in Europe as the pull factor. In 2015, more than a million migrants crossed into Europe, entering mostly through six EU nations— Greece, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Malta, and Cyprus. The vast majority arrived by sea but several thousands made their way over land via Turkey.
The presentation by Prof. Lino Briguglio, Professor of Economics and Director of the Islands and Small States Institute at the University of Malta, will cover a number of issues relating to the migration crisis including its economic, social, and legal considerations and the EU response to the crisis.
