- “Recent Economic Performance of the Philippines”
by Josef T. Yap, President, PIDS
The Philippines scored an impressive 6.6 percent full-year growth in 2012. This was driven mainly by the rebound in public construction spending and strong consumption expenditures. It is important to ask if this robust performance in 2012 can be sustained in the medium term and if economic growth is inclusive. How will the financial situation in the US and Europe dampen the country’s economic prospects for this year?
- “Promoting Inclusive Growth through the Pantawid Pamilya Program (4Ps)”
by Celia M. Reyes, Senior Research Fellow, PIDS
One way to make economic growth more inclusive is to upgrade the skills of the Philippine labor force, particularly the poor, so that they can participate in economic growth. The Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program(4Ps), the national government’s key strategy for poverty reduction and social development, was assessed with respect to its ability to upgrade the country’s human capital. The impact of 4Ps on children’s school participation was also analyzed using a nationally representative survey data.
