Today, the Socioeconomic Research Portal for the Philippines hosted a knowledge-sharing session titled “Unpacking the Rise of Online Filipino Platform Work and the Gig Economy” at the PIDS Conference Hall and via Zoom.

PIDS Research Specialist Ms. Queen Cel A. Oren presented key policies and initiatives for online workers in the Philippines. Dr. Cheryll Ruth Soriano from the DLSU-Social Development Research Center explored emerging forms of digital labor brokerage, while Ms. Miraluna Tacadao from the Institute for Labor Studies - DOLE discussed governance frameworks for gig workers.

Various participants from government, civil society, academe, and general public raised questions and comments about the ambiguities, challenges, and ways forward in nuancing online platform work and gig economy in the Philippines.
