A PIDS study assessed the application and regulation of modern biotechnology, which is recognized as a potential solution to low productivity, pest and disease infestation, and compromised quality of produce in the Philippine agriculture sector. The study found that barriers, such as lengthy and stringent regulatory processes and high technology development costs, hinder the development and uptake of modern biotechnology in the country.
