Several mental stressors affect the workforce, especially during the pandemic, thus, the need to prioritize mental health.

Pryncess Hyacinth Esguerra, director of the Human Resource Department of the Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC), emphasized this during the closing program of the 7th Annual Public Policy Conference (APPC) webinar series organized by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS).

Esguerra noted that workers’ productivity decreased during the pandemic due to sickness and lack of appropriate training.

She emphasized that apart from maintaining the physical fitness of employees, companies should also provide equal importance to their mental resilience.

“Our employees need to feel the culture of malasakit and trust in the workplace. This will affect their emotional well-being. Mahirap na ang negosyo para pahirapan pa natin ang ating mga empleyado. So with all the communication efforts toned from the top, we make sure that our people have collaboration and there is open communication when they need support,” Esguerra said.

RLC, she said, has implemented some strategies to support the overall well-being of its employees. These include conducting webinars on managing stress and anxiety in the workplace, practicing mindfulness, providing psychological first aid, and building mental resilience.

The HR head also noted RLC’s social agenda on the need to have balanced leadership in gender equality. Last year, the company was included in the Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index, scoring high particularly in equal representation in the workplace. The company’s ratio of men to women in leadership positions is 50:50, while 7 in 11 employees are women.

Esguerra also shared the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) philosophy. This is exemplified in their programs, including the Leadership and Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE), and certification for all new Metro Manila buildings such as the Tera Tower in Bridgetowne and Exxa and Zeta Towers.

“With our ESG in place, we know that the shareholders’ expectations have increased, and this is our platform to ensure that we are responding to the needs of the community during the pandemic and post-pandemic,” she said.

In closing, Esguerra noted that her company has been prioritizing corporate social responsibility, including the overall health of its employees, knowing that this will have a major impact on business recovery. “RLC has established measures that will foster a culture of health among our employees and the community at large,” she said.

The APPC is the main and culminating activity of the Development Policy Research Month celebration led by PIDS every September. This year’s theme is “Reset and Rebuild for a Better Philippines in the Post-Pandemic World”, or in Filipino, “Muling Magsimula at Magtayo Tungo sa Mas Matatag na Pilipinas Pagkatapos ng Pandemya”. ###
