Hello, PIDS friends! Here's our #PIDSFactFriday for the week on the effect of the pandemic on vulnerable groups in terms of their availment of essential healthcare services.
A PIDS study noted that the number of consultations in rural health units (RHUs) declined during the pandemic, particularly among vulnerable populations. This is alarming as RHUs are the gateway of individuals and communities to the public healthcare system. The study found a decline in consultations, especially among under-five children and the elderly (+65 years old), suggesting the possible growing unmet needs for essential healthcare services among these groups. Factors that could have contributed to the large decrease in outpatient visits include the strict stay-at-home policy imposed on children and the elderly.
