Aside from the revenue derived from it, tariffs also provide protection and incentives to domestic industry. Serious question has been put forwarded by this paper as to whether tariff protection really protects domestic industries. Despite disadvantages, tariffs are likely to remain as an important part of the government policies in the future as it not only provides revenues but also promotes new industries well suited to GATT rules.
