The Twentieth Jaime V Ongpin Annual Memorial Lecture on Public Service in Business and Government was delivered by Jose Ramon G Albert, PhD, Professional Statistician and Senior Research Fellow at the Philippine Institute for Development Studies. His lecture, entitled “Survey Says or Not,” was streamed live on Ateneo’s Facebook and YouTube Channels on 27 October 2021.
Albert cautioned Filipinos not to pin their hopes on online and kalye or street surveys in his lecture. These types of surveys, he said, are not statistically definitive or even offer a “reliable reading of these areas.”
“Surveys may not often offer explanations – on opinions and why opinions change – but we can conjecture and validate these with a conversation,” he said.
His lecture was followed with a discussion comprising an esteemed panel of reactors: Tomas P Africa, former administrator of the National Statistics Office, Nicco A de Jesus, Head of Research Standards Committee of the Marketing and Opinion Research Society of the Philippines, and Dr Zita V Albacea, professor at the UP Los Baños Institute of Statistics.
Established in 2001, the Jaime V Ongpin Annual Memorial Lecture on Public Service in Business and Government aims to increase the awareness of the Filipino people about pressing national development issues. Business leaders, senior government officials, and respected academics are invited to deliver lectures tackling essential themes in the nexus of democracy and development. It is named after the late Jaime V Ongpin, a public servant and business leader whose leadership, wisdom, and compassion continue to inspire Filipinos to live a life guided by virtues of integrity, courage, and trust.
