The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) ordered an explanation from three governors and two mayors for alleged violations of the quarantine guidelines. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said a “total lockdown” is an option due to the number of people violating the quarantine, adding that the Philippines has yet to flatten the curve.
Slashing rates some more
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas slashed key interest rates some more in a bid to keep the economy afloat during the pandemic. Socioeconomic Planning Sec. Ernesto Pernia said a partial reopening of malls may happen once the lockdown eases. Pernia also said another extension of the lockdown would be difficult to sustain. According to Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the Philippine economy could lose up to P2.5 trillion due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
BFF
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the government is leaning on its “BFF” (best friends forever) China to prioritize the Philippines if and when China finds a cure for COVID-19. The government also said it would continue to support the World Health Organization (WHO) after US President Donald Trump said he would withhold funding for the organization. Trump also vowed to reveal plans to reopen the US economy. International experts said the pandemic is affecting the fight against other infectious diseases like AIDS, tuberculosis, and cholera.
