For this week, our buzzword is “TVET”.
It stands for “technical and vocational education and training”. It refers to education and training designed to hone competencies and practical skills tailored to specific occupational fields, services, and livelihoods.

Based on data from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, a PIDS policy note saw that the number of people who enrolled in TVET for “personal use/interest/hobby” rose from 2 percent in 2012 to 17 percent in 2017.
This suggests that TVET students increasingly focus on personal growth rather than just finding employment. This shift in motivation could be a response to rapid advancements in technology and digitization, which have created a greater need for acquiring new skills.
