For this week, our buzzword is “gender gap”.
It refers to the differences or disparities between men and women in various aspects of life, such as access to education, employment, income, health care, and political representation.
Such differences may be caused by stereotypes, discrimination, cultural and social norms, and historical and systemic inequalities.

In a PIDS book about gender gap, one of the chapters highlighted the effect of housework on the labor market participation of women. In the Philippines, women spend 60 percent more hours than men doing care work related to children and elderly care and 64 percent more hours than men doing chores such as cleaning, cooking, and washing clothes. These limit their involvement in market or paid work and the realization of their full economic contribution.
