The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) is pleased to invite you to a Pulong Saliksikan on “Potential Economic Benefits of the Philippines from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership”, to be held on December 1, 2015, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, at the 18th floor, Three Cyberpod Centris – North Tower, EDSA corner Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.

The presenter is Dr. Cesar Cororaton, a research consultant and former senior research fellow of PIDS. At present, he is a research fellow at Virginia Tech-National Capital Region, Arlington, Virgina, USA.

Dr. Cororaton will discuss how the reduction in trade barriers under the prospective ASEAN + 6 free trade agreement will benefit the region, particularly the Philippines. The entry of cheaper imported rice in the Philippines negatively affects domestic rice production, but benefits the lower income households as rice is a major item in their food basket. The inflow of cheaper textile imports leads to lower textile production, but benefits the wearing apparel sector. The construction sector benefits from higher inflows of foreign investments. Output of the transportation and machinery equipment sector improves along with the increase in the construction sector. There are notable positive output effects in the service sectors, particularly in the transportation sector that benefits from the improvement in agriculture and manufacturing. The returns to land and as well as wages improve while the returns to capital decline. These effects are progressive in the sense that they favor lower income household groups. The effects decrease the poverty incidence in 10 years from 24.9 percent at present to 23.3 percent 2023.

All PIDS events are open to the public and there is no fee, but due to limited seating, registration is required. For more information please contact PIDS at 372-1291 / 372-1292 or email naquino@mail.pids.gov.ph.
