Jean Clarisse Carlos, head of project development at the Philippine Institute for Development Studies, said the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum is on the right track to achieve sustainable participation of women in the economy.
In statements to the Andina Agency, she said that in recent years the empowerment of women in different sectors such as tourism and investments has taken on greater importance; at the same time she highlighted that this topic has been included with special emphasis in the event held in Peru.
" I think it's going well, that is, here in Peru this year I see that in the group (of representatives of the 21 economies) there is the intention to be able to empower women; so, I think that APEC is going in the right direction to be able to have a sustainable participation of women in the economy, " she said.
Regarding the Declaration on Women and the Economy , which was approved during the APEC meetings in Arequipa, she said that this document will help member economies to develop their work maps.
" It helps women sustainably to solidify policies that can then be implemented and benefit everyone," she said.
" I hope that this document, which has been recently approved, will reach these women, these informal workers. I hope that this document will help women to be able to face the difficulties they see when they are in the informal sector," she added.
At another point, he said that the issue of informality is being investigated in the Philippines, especially in the area of tourism, a sector affected during the pandemic by the loss of jobs.
He also explained that one of the problems encountered when formalizing an activity or registering it with the relevant authorities is the fear of paying taxes or that they involve " a greater expense to be formal."
