The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) and the Asia Pacific Research and Training Network on Trade (ARTNeT) sponsored a forum on 14 August 2013 at the NEDA sa Makati Building, Makati City from 2:00 to 5:00 PM to launch the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific’s (UNESCAP) theme study for the 69th Session of the Commission entitled “Building Resilience to Natural Disasters and Major Economic Crises”.
Asia-Pacific is confronted with overlapping shocks which are becoming increasingly more frequent and large, and yet the region is far from ready to tackle this new reality. The report highlights lessons and good practices, and offers policy recommendations to protect the Asia-Pacific region from multiple shocks. For example, it shows how to build resilience into macroeconomic frameworks; how to strengthen social protection programmes to address multiple shocks and align these programmes with community coping strategies; how to identify critical sectors and protect them from disasters; how not to reach the rapidly approaching tipping point of the interlinked land, water, energy nexus; and how to strengthen supply chains from collapse during disasters.
