A PIDS study underscored the Philippines’ slowly ageing population wherein the elderly will comprise at least 7 percent of the total population in a little over a decade. This may pose substantial burden on the country’s resources yet may also provide potentials for economic growth if effective and responsive policies are in place. Translating the demographic transition into an economic advantage requires affirmative actions, such as providing direct cash transfers to ensure no one is left behind, expanding work opportunities, ensuring adequate human capital investments in health and education, and stimulating greater household savings.
