The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), lead convenor of the Philippine APEC Study Center Network (PASCN), in partnership with the University of the Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) will hold a symposium with the theme “Navigating the New Normal: Restarting and Rebuilding Global MSMEs”. It will be held on 23 June, 2021 (9:00 am to 12:00 pm) via the Webex Platform.
The symposium is one of PASCN’s information dissemination activities, which provides opportunity for researchers to present and disseminate the results and key findings of their studies to various stakeholders. It is also a forum to discuss important issues and concerns on APEC and related issues, regional integration and globalization as it impacts on the Philippine economy. This year’s theme is in support of our Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) APEC initiative on the Final Review of the Boracay Action Agenda (BAA) for MSMEs, of which BAA was endorsed by Trade Ministers in May 2015 and adopted by APEC Economic Leaders in November 2015. Session 1 will feature MSME studies with regional and other country’s perspectives while Session 2 will highlight the researches on Philippine MSMEs undertaken by PASCN member institutions.
The General Assembly or the Business Meeting of Network members will follow in the afternoon. The GA aims to convene the network members to update them of PASCN’s accomplishments and for them to share their respective research endeavors concerning APEC agenda and regional integration issues.
The PASCN was established in 1996 through Administrative Order 303 as the Philippines’ response to the APEC Leaders’ Education Initiative, which aims to develop regional cooperation among higher education and research institutions in the APEC region. It is one of the APEC Study Centers in APEC member-economies and is part of the APEC Study Center Consortium.
PASCN creates an avenue for universities and research institutions in the country to work together not only on issues pertaining to APEC but also on development reforms. The network is composed of the Asian Institute of Management, Ateneo de Manila University, Central Luzon State University, De La Salle University, Mindanao State University, Silliman University, University of Asia and the Pacific, University of San Carlos, University of the Philippines, Xavier University, Department of Foreign Affairs-Foreign Service Institute, and the PIDS as lead institution and secretariat.
