Deputy Economic Counselor of the United States Embassy Ms. Lynne Gadowski discussed economic priorities with Dr. Gilbert Llanto during a visit to the Philippine Institute for Development Studies.
Election year presents continuity challenges to development and economic growth. According to Dr. Llanto, a new administration will not necessarily set back policies and programs that have been proven sound and efficient. Legislation, education, and high expectations from the middle class will help ensure that good projects will continue.
But aside from ensuring the continuity, Dr. Llanto said that the agenda for the incoming administration should focus their economic agenda on improving four major areas, namely, infrastructure, fiscal space, human capital, and banking legislation. For more inclusive growth, the next administration must determine how to bring in the informal sector into the formal economy.
