State think-tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies joins Bangkok-based United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Strategic Communications and Advocacy Section in the national launch of the UNESCAP theme study entitled Building Resilience to Natural Disasters and Major Economic Crises on Wednesday, 14 August 2013, 2:00 – 5:00 PM at the Romulo Hall, NEDA sa Makati Building, Amorsolo St., Legaspi Village, Makati City. The theme study, presented in a 200-plus-page book, provides a comprehensive response to addressing multiple shocks in Asia and the Pacific. These shocks range from natural disasters, such as earthquakes, typhoons, droughts and floods, to convulsions in global markets such as the 2008 financial crisis and rocketing food and energy prices. Governments traditionally accustomed to focusing on problems in particular economic or social sectors now find themselves dealing with overlapping shocks that demand more comprehensive approaches to building resilience. The theme study shows how people, organizations, institutions, and policymakers can work together to weave resilience into economic, social and environmental policies.
